Crown-of-thorns starfish
A quiet predator is contributing to one of the Great Barrier Reef’s most significant ecological challenges. Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS), a native species that plays an important role in a healthy reef, are now appearing in outbreak numbers and are responsible for an estimated 50% of coral cover loss.
For the divers tasked with finding and controlling them, the work means searching every crevice of the reef, one starfish at a time. Over a year spent aboard a research vessel, I followed these efforts firsthand — documenting the science, the people, and the increasingly difficult fight to protect one of the world’s most important ecosystems.
